Re-Tree International and Oregon Lions Clubs Team up To Plant 450 Trees in Mexico

June 18 - 19, 2004

Re-Tree International, headquartered in Portland, OR and the Lions Clubs of Oregon, "Say Yes to Trees" program, teamed up with secondary schools and 200 school children in the State of Nayarit Mexico to plant over 450 trees along roadsides and near the schools in the cities of Compostela and Las Varas. Contacts were made through local Mexican schools to have 200 students in the villages of Las Varas, Juan Escutia, and Puerto Corillo plant Huanacastle trees which are native to the area.  Huanacastle trees, when mature, will provide excellent shade in a hot climate and their seeds are used for cattle feed and the hard wood has many uses in the local market. The second tree planting site in Las Varas was hit by a severe hurricane in 2002 and the trees planted in this village will help replace those lost. The project was so successful that the entire State of Nayarit plans to add the tree planting as a permanent part of each school curriculum with a goal of planting 10,000 trees each school year.
