Letters represent his views on women, soldiers, politicians, prizefighters, and show his enthusiasm for hunting, fishing, drinking and eating. Hemingway is colorful, opinionated and often truculent. He was widely regarded as a "man's man."
Whispers on the Wind, Donna Fletcher, Jove 1997. ISBN 0-515-12029-4. A look at a fellow romance writer's excellent use of characterization. A study in how one man can be the alpha and beta male at the same time. A pretty good read, too.
And to celebrate the women they frequented; Whiskey and Wild Women, Cy Martin, Hart, 1974. ISBN 08055-1125-3 (paperback 08055-0185-1). Sub-titled An Amusing Account of the Saloons and Bawds of the Old West, this book is a look at the men and women, mostly prostitutes, who were found in the drinking establishments of the Old West. Contains many great photos. Paints a vivid picture of the wild, immoral west. See your library for this one.
