Enjoying the Garden in Fall
Fall is a great time of year to be outside. Just because it's cold or wet doesn't mean we have to stay inside. Though I'll admit wrapping up around a cup of cocoa in front of a movie is great fun on a cold day.
Digging and dividing may have to wait now, due to wet soil, but winter-pruning, debris clean up and composting are good fall tasks to keep active and stay fit. Decide this year to build that cold frame for early spring propagation. Or, be a little ambitious and build yourself a mini greenhouse with PVC and heavy clear plastic. Then you'll be all set in the spring, and have no excuse for a late vegetable garden!
Do your cane berries need some support? Then put up those posts and add wire now, when the canes are pruned and out of the way.
Put together an arbor from a kit and add a couple of climbing roses in January or plan for some other climbers in the spring. An arbor will add interest year round and also add height to your garden.
I've been so pleased with the simple and easy arbor I built this summer. It serves as a focal point in my perennial border (even though it leads to nowhere) and sets off our newly fenced corner in the same wood finish. The two projects made a huge difference in my yard, adding structure and a sense of architecture.
Plan something simple for your garden this winter to add interest, if even just some lattice in the corner to grow a climber on.
