| Columbia County Education Campus (CCEC)
is an alternative school serving all school districts in Columbia County.
The school was created to provide an additional educational alternative
for students who failed to succeed in traditional schools. It opened
in the fall of 1997 and has a current enrollment of more than 100 middle
school and high school students. The program goals are to help reduced
the drop out rate, to provide opportunities for credit recovery, to increase
students success, and to draw students back into the school system.
Flexible scheduling, alternative curriculum, individual educational planning,
employment/school coordination, and case management of social services
are a few ways ccec attempts to address the whole students.
The personnel at CCEC consists of three
full-time teachers, two half time teaching assistants, a one full-time
secretary, one part-time jobs coordinator, and one full-time case manager.
The middle school program has limited enrollments (12-15 students) and
is held in the mornings, Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday
through Thursday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. High school students
can choose their own hours as long as they meet basic attendance requirements.
In order to gain admission to the CCEC
middle school or high school program, the students and parents must fill
out an application (available at St. Helen's high school) and meet with
Gordon Jarman, assistance principal at St. Helen's high school. (If
the student is coming from another school in the County, he or she must
first obtained a referral from an administrator at his or her home school.)
Mr. Jarman is the initial contact person for all referrals to ccec.
Mr. Jarman may refer the student directly to the ccec program or he may
request the students and family meet with a placement team in order to
determine the best educational placement.
Networking with County agencies enables
the ccec staff to develop educational contracts and students/family plans
that are comprehensive and that are co-operative with family and agencies
outside the school. The staff is committed to serving the whole students
and to providing another option in Columbia County for students to stay
in school and be successful.
