| The South Columbia learning center is
an alternative high school contracted to provide services to high school
students, age 14 -- 21, from this Scappoose and St. Helen's school districts.
Each district as 15 slots for a total enrollment of 30 students.
The purpose of the school is to assist students to stay in school and complete
the requirements for a diploma. The students are offered the opportunity
to complete the district required credits for a diploma and learn the skills
necessary for success in the community and the workplace in an environment
that meets then needs and learning styles. The option for completion
often a GED is also available. Social skills are talked in addition
to academic subjects. Drug and alcohol intervention/prevention education
is provided. The program is structured with a close campus and an
80% attendance requirements.
The students attendance school from 9 a.m.
to 2.30 p.m. each day. They have 3 breaks and a 30 minute lunch.
A number of students arrive at school early and stay late. Lunch
is ordered from the St. Helen's middle school and is delivered to the school.
The staff (1 licensed teacher and 3 classified assistants) work a staggered
schedule permitting two people to be on duty from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each
day.
Referral
Process
The liaison counselor at each school is
notified of an opening as soon as one is available. Mrs. Pat Fery
is the liaison at St. Helen's high school and Mr. Ed Rees is the Scappoose
liaison. The prospective students complete application received from
the counseling department at their home school. The counselors ,
special education staff, and vice principals meets to review the applications
and choose a student for an interview.
The student and Parents/Guardian meet with
the SCLC staff at the SCLC campus for an interview. They are provided
information about the program and given the guidelines. Students
and parents/guardians signed a contract agreeing to follow the guidelines.
Students are excepted according to criteria established by the SCLC. |
