Columbia County Rotary

RI Wants to Hear from You!

As Rotary approaches its first centennial (2005), RI's Public Information Department is looking closely at ways to improve the organization's public image and has, in that regard, come up with a Web-based survey to collect the views of Rotarians. Results from the survey will be used as part of a communications plan being developed by an advertising agency. To fill out the Rotary International Public Image Questionnaire, go to the bottom of Rotary's homepage at http://www.rotary.org and click on the header "Complete a Public Image Questionnaire".

Rotary/HELP Golf Tournament a Success

76 golfers turned out September 16th for a warm, sunny day of golf. Rotarians were joined by HELP Food Bank volunteers and Scappoose High School FBLA members to put on the tournament.  Golfers were treated to Scappoose Sandwiches as they made the turn after the first nine holes, and then feasted on a prime rib dinner when they finished.  Final numbers are still being tallied, but thanks to the wonderful tournament sponsors, we're sure to have raised money to help feed the hungry in our community.  Photo Gallery

Rotary Duck Derby Raises $8,600

Our Duck Derby float took Third Place in
its category in the RiverFest Parade!

Roxie and Gary Templin of St. Helens took the top prize in Columbia County Rotary's Duck Derby July 15th.

The Templin's duck crossed the finish line first, winning them a seven-day trip for two to Hawaii. Rotarian Dino Crandall won second place, a trip to Las Vegas. Dennis Widme, Ann & Bob Mathers and Donna Smith all won $100 chamber gift certificates for third through fifth place, while Art Heerwagen, Wendy Bjorndahl and Alyn Doyle took home $40 gift certificates for sixth through eighth place.

The duck derby is the Rotary club's major fundraiser for the year. The money raised is used to support local organizations and club programs, including its international youth exchange program.

"This was our most successful duck derby ever," said Rotarian Johneta Johnson. "We sold more tickets than we ever have, thanks to the hard work of our members." The fundraiser netted $8,600 for the club's service activities in the county.

Casino Night Raises Nearly $8,000

Columbia County Rotary's second annual casino night, held March 11th at the St. Helens Elks Lodge, raised nearly $8,000 that will help feed Columbia County's hungry and go toward other community service projects.

Columbia Pacific Food Bank, one of eighteen regional food banks in Oregon, serves all of Columbia County.  Collectively, the regional food banks saw a 15% increase in the number of food boxes given out in 1999.  And because Columbia County continues to grow, many people don't realize just how many people go without meals in their community.

Through this Casino Night fundraiser, Columbia County Rotary was able to make a $4,000 donation to the food bank, which was accepted by food bank director Tracie Smith and Board Members Monte Gustafson and Heidi Cutler at the April 19th rotary meeting.

"We would like to thank Columbia Rotary for this donation," said Smith.  "I was amazed to see the number of people who turned out for your event and helped support this cause."

The remaining proceeds will go to the club general fund, which supports several local charitable causes throughout the year.

"We'd like to thank all the local businesses who helped sponsor our event," said casino night chair Lorie Hulbert.  "Their support made this event a great success."
